Ankylosing Spondylitis

WHAT IS ANKYLOSING SPONDYLITIS (AS)?

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a form of arthritis that affects more males than females. It is a chronic inflammatory disease that mainly affects the ligaments and joints of the spine, causing them, in the long term, to fuse. This fusing causes stiffness and inflexibility which then makes a good posture difficult as well as other activities.

Synovial joints are affected, particularly the ribs where they attach at the front at your sternum, making it difficult to breathe easily and deeply. The neck can become very painful during inflammatory episodes. Hamstring stretches can be painful as AS also affects the attachment of the hamstrings on your sitting bones. This is why Remedial Massage to the hamstrings can not only ease pain in the hamstrings but also allow the back to move more efficiently and with more comfort.

Because of fusing, the back is vulnerable to injury which is why it is important to keep muscles as healthy as possible with Remedial & Sports Massage or Relaxation Massage.

The severity of AS varies from mild to severe. It is mild or moderate in most cases. Once AS has been diagnosed treatment includes regular exercise and anti-inflammatory medicines. Back pain and stiffness of the spine are the most common signs of AS.

We help people with Ankylosing Spondylitis with Remedial and Sports Massage combined with mobilisations to ribs and facet joints. Our goal is to keep people as mobile as possible for as long as possible. As ever, any pain can, hopefully, be relieved with Remedial & Sports Massage or Relaxation Massage

Shiatsu and Reflexology have been found to be of great help as they work on the whole body and encourage relaxation and healing. Naturopathy can be useful as changes in regard to lifestyle and diet will be recommended.
