ABOUT HOT STONE MASSAGE
Heated stones have been used therapeutically for thousands of years, in China, Iran, Central America and by native Americans. Smooth black basalt lava stones are used in massage because their porousness holds heat and absorbs toxins from the body.
Before massage the stones are immersed in water and heated to 55 degrees. The heat from the stones loosens stiff muscles and relaxes the body and mind, deeply and meditatively.
WHAT HAPPENS DURING A HOT STONE MASSAGE?
The massage starts with the client lying face down. The stones are held to check they are not too hot, and then placed on specific points. Once the body is warmed and relaxed, the stones become an extension of the therapist’s hands, massaging the body with organic massage waxes.
This process is repeated on other parts of the body. Sometimes small stones are also placed between your toes or in the palm of your hand.
During massage the client is unclothed beneath a towel. Only the area of the body being worked on is uncovered.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF A HOT STONE MASSAGE?
Many people find the warmth of the stones comforting as well as relaxing. Their weight helps you feel grounded, reassured, and nurtured. They also increase circulation and lymph flow, and this in turn allows healing nutrients to travel to the treated areas.
People with muscle tension who prefer a lighter touch often opt for a hot stone massage as the therapeutic effects permeate the body without the need for too much deep bodywork. The heat helps to ease pain in conditions such as:
- Muscular aches and pains
- Poor circulation
- Rheumatic and arthritic conditions, e.g. osteoarthritis and arthritis
- Fibromyalgia
- Multiple Sclerosis
- Back pain
- Frozen shoulder
